GARRUCHA

A wonderful fishing port with plenty for all to see and do. With three ports: fishing, commercial and sports. The busy fishing port has been the lifeblood of this town for hundreds of years and still forms a substantial part of the commerce in the area. It is still a wonderful sight to see the fleet of fishing boats leave every morning during the early hours in a flurry of fishing activity, to return later with their catch which is auctioned on the dock side to housewives, chefs and tourists alike. Don’t worry if you don’t manage to get there in time, there are plenty of restaurants in this town where you can enjoy the freshest fish cooked in a variety of Spanish styles all day long.

Almeria

The pleasant and mainly modern port-city of Almería faces the sea, spreading out beneath the steep grey hill, dominated by a magnificent Moorish fort, the Alcazaba. The town is divided into two parts by the Rambla de Belén, which runs down the Avenida de Federico García Lorca – the old town to the west, the new to the east. La Rambla itself is a long avenue with adjoining squares in which to enjoy the shops and cafes and, for children, the play areas. Puerta de Purchena to the north, a busy traffic junction, is the centre of the modern city. It also marks the spot where in 1490 the city’s last Moorish ruler surrendered to the Catholic monarchs.
